When you’re planning your Washington, DC, engagement portraits, there’s a good chance you want to include some iconic scenery. This city is rich with gorgeous spaces that are positively picturesque. Now, it’s time to find that perfect spot. That’s where I come in! As a Washington, DC, engagement photographer, I spend a lot of time exploring the monuments with my clients. If you’re on the search for the best monument for your engagement portraits, let me tell you what you can expect from a Jefferson Memorial engagement photos session so you can decide if it’s the spot for you! Chloe and Wilson traveled all the way from Alabama, to have their engagement photos taken at the Jefferson Memorial. Chloe stunned in her light blue ruffled dress, while Wilson looked oh so dapper in his navy blue suit. The couple braced the cold and walked away with such dreamy film images commemorating this milestone!

The Jefferson Memorial dates back to 1943. It was constructed in the classical revival style with towering marble columns and a central bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson holding the Declaration of Independence. While it displays a prominent part of American history, it also puts the best parts of Washington, D.C., on full display. The area offers some of the best views of the other monuments as well as the cherry blossoms of early spring.
Because the Jefferson Memorial is open on all sides, natural light is nearly always streaming in for engagement photos. Both sunrise and sunset transform this space with warm colors that will elevate your portraits. One of the most beloved spots for couples’ portraits is between the marble columns. The structures bring an effortless sophistication to your pictures, giving you a neutral yet detail-rich backdrop. The stairs leading up to the monument also tend to be a great spot. You’ll have the waterfront views of the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument as your backdrop. Plus, the trees are beautiful year-round, with the cherry blossoms in spring and the vibrant leaves of early fall. Finally, the monument has countless cozy nooks where you can sneak a peek or escape the crowds.
There are several things you need to know to be prepared for your Jefferson Memorial engagement photos. Let’s first chat about timing. As you probably know, most places in DC tend to stay busy all year long. This is why I always recommend planning a sunrise photo session. Yes, it can be a bit of a pain for you night owls, but it’s your best chance to get the monument to yourself. Plus, you’ll get some pretty magical lighting! As with all monuments in DC, the NPS does require you to pay $50 for a permit and a $90 filing fee. We can chat ahead of your portraits, and I’ll happily walk you through all the steps.
There are parking lots close by, so you don’t have to compromise those adorable heels if you don’t want to. This is also ideal for bringing a change of clothes or two. Finally, if you want to take advantage of the cherry blossoms surrounding the memorial, you will want to book the portraits around March or April. NOAA gives their best predictions of prime cherry blossom season early each year, so you can do your best to schedule around the flowers. Just be aware that the Basin is the best place to see the trees, which means you’ll be dealing with a lot of tourists!
